Why I Write Competent Characters

A spacecraft officer studies a failing system, illustrating how competence creates responsibility under pressure.

Skilled characters, whether in science fiction or any genre, aren’t compelling because they have all the answers. They’re compelling because they grasp the implications of getting it wrong. This understanding is crucial to me. In the realm of science fiction, competent science fiction characters are often portrayed as wish fulfillment: the expert arrives, identifies what others missed, and fixes the issue. There’s a fleeting satisfaction in that, but it doesn’t feel genuine, nor does it deliver the kind of pressure I seek in storytelling.

I’m intrigued by what happens when ability creates obligation. My geophysical career taught me that trained individuals notice vulnerabilities before anyone else. They see a failing plan while others cling to the hope it might hold. This knowledge doesn’t simplify choices; it complicates them by making it harder to walk away from the right decision.

In the tales I gravitate towards, competence isn’t a shield from fear, doubt, loss, or consequence. It merely reduces the places to hide. Understanding a system means knowing where it might fail. If you have the capability to act, stepping away becomes its own choice. When others depend on your judgment, doubt does not alleviate its burden.

This is why competent characters matter in my writing. They drive the story because they can take action. They can uphold decisions under pressure, assess a declining situation, commit to a course, and accept that consequences will follow regardless. Skill shouldn’t diminish danger; it should amplify it. Competent characters should perceive threats more clearly. Their preparation should unearth the consequences earlier. Experience should reveal the trade-offs before anyone can deny their existence.

I don’t craft competent characters who are immune to harm. I write them as individuals capable of doing the job — meaning they can’t feign that the responsibility is someone else’s. In science fiction with consequences, I want readers to feel the weight of these responsibilities. Even when machinery is immense, systems are flawed, and stakes surpass any individual’s control, the individual still counts. Someone must choose, act, and bear what follows.

If you’re drawn to stories where skill carries moral weight, where preparation has consequences rather than solutions, and where earned endings result from reckoning instead of escape, you’ll appreciate the competent characters I create.
