I have decided to dip my toe into the serialized fiction world. It is something I’ve considered for some time, and if I am honest, was waiting for Amazon to open up their Vellum serial platform to Canadians. But that doesn’t appear to be happening, so I’ve decided to publish it on my own platform.
Of course, this is an experiment. If it proves to be popular I will write more stories in this format, eventually publishing them as novels or novellas, depending on the ultimate length of what comes out.
This is the opportunity for author and reader to collaborate, to a degree. Each week I will publish a new episode to my ko-fi page. Readers will be able (and are encouraged) to actively participate in the creative process by offering comments and suggestions about where the story is going, what might happen next, where the story bogs down, what characters are interesting enough to spend more time on…the possibilities are endless.
It also gives the reader an opportunity to see how a story can develop and evolve as its characters come into their own.
Unlike my novels, this serial has no outlined storyline. It will definitely be an exercise in “discovery writing,” and if I am being honest, frightens me a little. Also, the reader will be getting the writing in pretty much raw format, so I apologize in advance for the spelling and grammar errors, and the inevitable plot inconsistencies that crop up before a story goes through editing.
I have no idea how this will turn out, but so far it has been fun writing the story.
